Mixed Infrastructure Monitoring
Unified Windows, Linux, Hyper-V, storage and backup systems into one Zabbix-based monitoring and operational model with custom discovery and centralized alerting.
Context
A heterogeneous environment — Windows and Linux servers, Hyper-V, RAID controllers, storage, backup systems and cloud services — had inconsistent, siloed visibility.
Challenge
- Different technologies with different (or no) monitoring.
- Disk and array health invisible until failure.
- Backups not consistently verified.
- No single operational view or alerting model.
My role
Monitoring architect — responsible for unifying diverse technologies into one monitoring and operational model, not just writing a single script.
Responsibilities
- Zabbix architecture
- Custom PowerShell discovery
- SMART monitoring
- RAID monitoring
- Hyper-V monitoring
- Backup monitoring
- Standardization of monitoring keys
- Centralized alerting
Architecture
- Zabbix as the central monitoring platform.
- A discovery and integration layer normalizing heterogeneous systems.
- Standardized monitoring keys so metrics are comparable across systems.
- Centralized alerting feeding a clear operational response.

Project lifecycle
- 01
Heterogeneous systems
Diverse, siloed technologies.
- 02
Discovery & integration
Custom discovery normalizes them.
- 03
Central monitoring
Unified in Zabbix.
- 04
Alerts
Consolidated, meaningful alerting.
- 05
Operational response
Clear path from alert to action.
Implementation
- Custom PowerShell discovery surfacing SMART, RAID, Hyper-V and backup health.
- Monitoring keys standardized across system types.
- Alerting consolidated to reduce noise and surface what matters.
- Operational dashboards giving a single view of infrastructure health.
Documentation & handover
Operational and project documentation were prepared as part of delivery, with handover and acceptance support included where in scope — so the environment can be operated, audited and improved after go-live.
Client names and selected implementation details are intentionally anonymized.
Outcome
One monitoring and operational model across mixed infrastructure, with consistent metrics, centralized alerting and earlier visibility of failures.
